The Greatest Running Gun Battle EVER.

If you haven’t seen ‘Heat’ you’re an idiot. Go and buy it now. Andy ‘Bravo to Zero’ McNabb was a combat consultant on the set, trained everyone involved in the gun battle in the use of ‘power weapons’ hence Deniro and Kilmer are totally badass shots.

Then there’s the fact that in order to make the holes in the cars look realistic, Mann took them to a rifle range, shot them with the same caliber bullets used in the end scene. Back on set Mann filled in the holes, so when the squibs explode out from the cars, they would be the right size, and look realistic. That’s commitment.

  1. CHRIST!!!! More more more…. wheres my Heat DVD. Was thinking about this movie today. Any one scene in Heat would be the highlight of any other movie: When Sizemore gives the guy ‘The Look’ in the Cafe. The Puccino - De Niro Scene. De Niro and his lady, the drive-in movie scene, the taking photos their nemesis’, the money wagon scene… too much. This movie is the greatest. Why dont more people use ex SAS to help choriograph gunplay.

I heard Mann didn’t overdub any sounds on the guns in that scene and kept all the sounds of it echoing around the buildings and ‘topping out’ the microphones.

  2. Sometimes, when I’m alone, I caress my 2-disk SE Heat DVD and cry softly to myself at just how damn FUCKING GOOD it is. Mann, I salute you.

Microphenia, I think it’s your duty to replicate the ‘Sizemore stare’ at every opportunity.

  3. Awesome. Yeah Al Puccino is amazing in this film. Apparently the sound design that went into capturing just how loud and dark those guns / gunshots are was quite intense. Mann has the perfect name, his movies are proper man movies in all their swaggering, self hating, honourable, lame, violent glory. Cant wait for Miami Vice.
