First production from ‘Warp Films’ and ‘Warp X’

Dead man's shoes'Warp X' was a new initiative launched back in March by 'Warp Films' the filmic branch of the music label 'Warp'. 'Warp X' is basically a low-budget studio, they plan to make 7 films over the next year, with budgets between £400,000 and £700,000, shooting digitally and hopefully injecting some much needed energy into the british film system. If any of their films are of the same standard as 'Dead Man's Shoes' they're headed in the right direction… but for every Shane Meadows there's a Michael Bassett.

Starting as they hopefully mean to go on, it looks like the first film they're going to drop is a really interesting one. Dominic Hailstone is an ex-creature effects guy (he worked on the uber creepy 'Come to Daddy' video for Aphex Twin) who caused a little bit of fuss with his incredible short 'the eel'. Hailstone is signed up to direct the first feature 'Say you Love Satan' a black comedy about an english death metal band trapped in the backwoods. It sounds perfect, and seeing what Dominic did with just £300 in his short, you can only imagine where this could go.

The death metal scene is ripe for parody (of the dark kind) and and if it comes close the the  genius that is 'Dethklok' we're off to a good start.

  1. Holy shit I should have been a consultant on this! I know more about death metal than movies…

Sounds great. They better get it right!

  2. Come to Daddy was an Aphex Twin video. Either way, it was a video for a Warp act, right? So nobody from outside the company cracking in? Suppose it will have to be me.

  3. Aphex twin it was, I need to stop writing these posts when I’m half asleep…

  4. If anybody needs a primer for a death metal parody, then look no further than “Day of the Beast” (El dia de la Bestia) by Alex de L’Iglesia (sorry bout spelling!) which parodies the Exorcist/Omen/Death Metal/Apocalypse axis to brilliant effect! great soundtrack too, track it down you will not be dissapointed!

  5. Day of the Beast is a cracking film…. I really liked ‘wild Zero’ too… more roackabilly than death metal… but still a lot of fun…starring the awesome guitar wolf, ROCKKKKR N ROLLLLLRRRRRRRRRRRRR

    zombies, metal and jap-bikers… genius

  6. Come to Daddy was directed and produced by Chris Cunningham, the man responsible for Windowlicker, Bjork’s All is full of love, Rubber Jonny (which is uber sick and features chris’s own body contorting in ways nothing on this planet ever should) and Portishead’s Only You.
Interestingly, he also worked on Alien Ressurection as a creature effects supervisor!

    Just my tuppence worth! ^_^

  7. [...] X is the low budget film division of warp music, that we’ve mentioned before. They have several interesting projects on the go including a film called ‘Donkey [...]
