A short fall from the tower of ‘Babel’
For those that have not seen it Babel is a dream pitch; picture this, "3 stories, 3 continents (Asia, Middle East, America north/south), 3 languages…two Hollywood stars Brad (Pitt) and that Aussie Elf Queen (Cate Blanchet) and one flavour of the month Mexican director (Alejandro González Iñárritu). It's gonna win gongs and trophies galore it's gonna be moving it's gonna be epic!"
And it is all there but someone forgot to write a script, it's Altman without the craft, it's by the numbers multi-narrative cinema but just a bit lost and anchor-less. The only memorable scene is during the young deaf/mute Japanese girl's adventures into clubland, and I've been reliably informed that was lifted from a short film. I'm too lazy to research which one but hey you're on the t'internet you do it, it'll be time well spent - unlike watching this, which to be frank depresses the shite out of me as it should be great.
Very pleased to read this. I hate all this guys films. I haven’t been able to face this from day one. Decided not to watch it out of spite for the hype. Overblown wank!
Hi i’m mexican and i hate Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu movies. He’s so pretentious, he make movies only to win awards, and he’s wining some of them, i hope he doesn’t win the oscar, his ego will be huge. And yeah Babel is overrated. I prefer Alfonso Cuaron or Guillermo del Toro, they really like to make movies, and good ones.
Absolutely!!! Thank God I’m not alone on this
I did’nt think it was all bad, but totally unworthy of the hype. Blanchet and Pitt’s relationship was also totally unbelievable, but a great performance from the Japanese girl (Rinko Kikuchi).
I have nominated Babel as the worst “best picture” nominee of the year… for all the reasons you all stated above. Help us tell the academy how to vote… visit http://www.notbestpicture.com
