Tarantino’s ‘Death Proof’ gets a soundtrack.
Wednesday, February 28th, 2007
This is a small bit of news but it’s interesting to see what goes into a Tarantino soundtrack, as it’s nearly always references to what’s influenced him. The soundtrack will officially be released on April 3rd, 3 days before the film comes out in america, but I guarantee some fanboy puts these tracks together in mp3 format before the end of the day.
“The Last Race” — Jack Nitzsche
“Baby, It’s You” — Smith
“Paranoia Prima” — Ennio Morricone
“Planning & Scheming” — Eli Roth & Michael Bacall
“Jeepster” — T Rex
“Stuntman Mike” — Rose McGowan & Kurt Russell
“Staggolee” — Pacific Gas & Electric
“The Love You Save (May Be Your Own)” — Joe Tex
“Good Love, Bad Love” — Eddie Floyd
“Down In Mexico” — The Coasters
“Hold Tight” — Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich
“Sally and Jack (From the Motion Picture “Blow Out”)” — Pino Donaggio
“It’s So Easy” — Willy DeVille
“Whatever-However” — Tracie Thoms & Zoe Bell
“Riot In Thunder Alley” — Eddie Beram
“Chick Habit” — April March
Nice, so there’s some DePalma in there with ‘Blow Out’ (a fucking great film if you’ve never seen it), The Ennio Morricone track is from a Dario Argento film called ‘Cat O’nine Tails’ an itallian giallo horror. Jack Nizsche is the composer of the ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest’ score, but this track ‘The Last Race’ is from ‘Village of the Giants’, a pulpy 1960’s science fiction film. Riot in Thunder Alley is unsurprisingly from a film called ‘Thunder Alley’ a 1960’s speedway flick. Lost’s of interesting stuff in there and a lot of the non-soundtrack stuff appears to be glam-rock or 60’s/70’s pop inspired.
Here’s what else the press release has to say:
“Death Proof” follows Austin’s hottest DJ, Jungle Julia (Sydney Tamiia Poitier) as she sets out into the night to unwind with her two friends Shanna (Jordan Ladd) and Arlene (Vanessa Ferlito). Covertly tracking their moves is Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell), a scarred rebel leering from behind the wheel of his muscle car, revving just feet away.
The soundtrack includes classic songs from the ’60s and ’70s, such as “Jeepster” from British glam rock band T Rex, “Staggolee” from San Francisco blues band Pacific Gas & Electric, “Down In Mexico” from doo-wop legends The Coasters, and “Good Love, Bad Love” by Stax R&B legend Eddie Floyd. It also features a haunting composition, entitled “Paranoia Prima,” from legendary Italian film score composer Ennio Morricone. The songs are interspersed with dialogue voiced by the actors including Russell, Rose McGowan, Eli Roth, and Michael Bacall.
J.J. ‘Lost’ Abrams will direct Star Trek movie, FACT.
Wednesday, February 28th, 2007
The speculation that J.J. Abrams the creator of ‘Alias’, ‘Lost’ and the director of ‘MI3′ will direct a new Star Trek film has been flying around the web for weeks now, and yesterday it was finally confirmed by Paramount as being true. I try not to report on too much speculation, because if I did I’d be here all day writing about what could and might happen in the world of movies. I’ve never been in to ‘Star Trek’, but I did like ‘Lost’ despite its ups and downs and MI3 was the best film in the series to date. J.J. Abrams is obviously a capable director so I’m interested to see anything he’s involved with.
This from IESB:
The team behind the film will include Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (‘Mission Impossible III”) who wrote the screenplay and will executive produce with Bryan Burk. JJ Abrams and “Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof will produce. The film will begin shooting this fall for a Christmas Day 2008 release.
On the same note there were also casting rumours circulating, apparantly Matt Damon is in talks to play Captain Kirk, with Adrien Brody possibly being cast as Spock, and Gary Sinise as Bones. As we know casting rumours often turn out to be total bullshit, but still they would be interesting choices to play said parts.
From IGN:
Confirming rumours that have been making the rounds for some months now, IGN has learned that Oscar winner Matt Damon is indeed in talks with Paramount about playing the role of Jim Kirk, previously immortalized on screen by Emmy winner William Shatner.
For the part of Kirk’s Vulcan first officer Mr. Spock, IGN has been told that none other than Oscar winner Adrien Brody (King Kong, The Pianist) is in talks with Paramount to play the role.
IGN has also been told that Oscar nominee Gary Sinise — currently seen on the small screen in CSI: NY — is in talks for the role of Dr. McCoy, the ornery and politically incorrect ship’s physician aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.

First stills from ‘Mister Lonely’
Tuesday, February 27th, 2007
We talked about the new Harmony Korine film ‘Mister Lonely’ a little while back. Some stills from the film arrived over at Twitch. It looks really interesting, but also looks like a big departure stylistically for Korine, so we’ll have to wait and see how it pans out.
After these dropped I started scavenging around on the net for any other images from the film I could find. I dug up some great ones of Werner Herzog (Pictured) talking to people in Africa (I presume, It looks like an African location). Anything with Herzog acting in has to be worth a look… even when it’s just a film about him eating his shoe… quite literally.
Want to see Diego Luna dressed like Michael Jackson?

Lynch talks Cows, Cheese and Laura Dern in Q&A
Tuesday, February 27th, 2007
I’ve yet to see the new David Lynch film ‘Inland Empire’, but the consensus i’m hearing seems to be very much divided. As i’ve mentioned before with David Lynch films, and often with Lynch in general you either love him or hate him, there’s no middle ground. Either way I think he’s an interesting guy to hear talk about his work; he’s done some weird shit to promote the film, and his distribution method for Inland Empire was basically driving around to theatres with the print in the back of his car. Also he still does the LA weather report from his kitchen everyday (bottom right button), so even if you don’t like his films you have to have some respect for the guys maverick nature.
Greencine has a nice video interview with him that they’vce divided up into handy portions.
Check out the interview page here, the links to each slice of the interview are at the bottom of the page, it’s worth watching or at least listening too in the background if you have the chance.

‘Skinwalkers’ AKA Werewolves on wheels
Tuesday, February 27th, 2007
Hmmm, the new new great-white-hope of werewolf films? I highly doubt it, but anythings better than that pile of shit ‘Underworld’. The look of Skinwalkers reminds me a lot of ‘John Carpenters Vampires’, which I can only watch when I’m medicated or if i’m on a James Woods kick.
Here’s the synopsis:
Two packs of werewolves, divided by principles are signaled by the moon of the coming of an ancient prophecy. A small boy named Timothy (Matthew Knight) approaches his 13th birthday, unaware this marks the time of his transformation. Timothy has been raised by his mother Rachel (Rhona Mitra), his grandmother (Barbara Gordon), his Uncle Jonas (Elias Koteas), his cousin Katherine (Sarah Carter) and her boyfriend, Adam (Shawn Roberts). Rachel and her son Timothy have been unaware that the rest of the family are good werewolves that have guarded Timothy since birth. They know that Timothy is a half blood, and will control the destiny of the family. But they also know that Timothy’s power will put him in danger, for there are other werewolves that revel and embrace their blood-lust that are prepared to kill to preserve their way of life. These werewolves, led by Varek (Jason Behr), Zo (Kim Coates) and Sonya (Natassia Malthe), are hell bent on finding Timothy…their kin.
It’s not going to be better than Dog Soldiers… that’s for sure. Also why the hell do they put these pretty boys in the leads? I want my heros/anti-heros grizzled and cold…. with the dead black eyes of a shark. shark-eyed motherfuckers like Christian Bale and Daniel Craig….. even Thomas Jane. That’s one of the reasons I guess Daniel Craig worked well as Bond, I honestly believed he could kill a man by punching his nose into his brain. This Jason Behr guy… just looks like he spent way too long blow-drying his hair instead of looking like he just got a tattoo of the word ‘Fuck-Kill’ scribed on his skull.
Here’s the trailer:
New ‘Sunshine’ clips and tons of photos
Tuesday, February 27th, 2007
There’s films i’ve been excited about like ‘300‘ and ‘Grindhouse‘ that have been on slow-burn for a while with lots of video and stills hitting the net long before the films are due for release. Then there’s films like ‘Sunshine’ that have snuck up on me ninja-style out of nowhere, and while I initially had no interest in it, now i’m checking the official site everyday to look for new developments. One thing I can’t quite get over is how incredibly beautiful the film is looking, it’s really blowing me away anytime I see anything new. I liked the grainy DV look in ‘28 Days Later’ but i’m visually obsessed and the slick look of ‘Sunshine’, well, it has me by the short-and-curlies.
There’s a couple of new clips from the film over at the official movie website sunshinedna.com, check them out here:
The Icarus II gets to Mercury (The score is sounding killer too)
A brief chat with Chris Evans (teen movie fodder, slowly turning into an actually pretty good actor)
and in case you missed it there’s a high-res version of the movies official trailer here
I’ve also collected stills from the film from all over the net and gathered them in our flickr account here, check them out if you get the chance, there’s some really cool ones, and i’m loving the spacesuit design (pictured above)
The films UK release date still seems to be set for April 6th, but cinematical reports the film has been pushed back in the US to autumn 2007.
‘Grindhouse’ wallpapers, and a game…
Tuesday, February 27th, 2007sweeettt…. I’ve now got Michael Biehn gracing my desktop, today is gonna be a good day. The official grindhouse website has been updated with a load of wallpapers from the movie, and just to save you waiting for the flash site to load, i’ve uploaded them to our flickr here (click ‘all sizes’ to grab the big versions) there’s some for 1024 screens and some for 1280’s.
The game is also pretty sweet and will definitely kill some time if you have a lull in your day. There’s a zombie and you have to pick different weapons to maim him with… that’s as complicated as it gets. tasty.
Check out the game on the official grindhouse site here (click on ‘GH Scream Machine’)
