Rob Zombies ‘Halloween’, the night the trailer came home…

I think it’s probably time to stop mentioning this film in the context of a remake, everybody knows it is, and I don’t really want to hear myself argue it out again. Carpenter’s original is great, but I want to see what Zombie is going to do with it.
One thing I think Zombie does do well is establish a sense of dread, and also he knows how to do gruesome violence, the two things that could make ‘Halloween’ a cut above. House of a 1000 corpses was a high budget student film, and as I’ve mentioned before I really liked ‘The Devils Rejects’ just for the revisit to grimey 70’s exploitation filmmaking. I think ‘Halloween’ could turn out to be fairly decent horror flick… I may be eating my words come August time, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Check out the trailer over at Yahoo here
For me the original Halloween had a lot less to do with the guy in the Shatner mask and a lot more to do with Dr Loomis. Now I love Malcolm McDowell, but his current hammy self is not going to come anywhere near Donald Pleasence.
Maybe I’m mistaken, but I can’t imagine fans of the original Halloween will want to see this. Maybe some, of course, but not all. Zombie is changing everything that was great about the original Halloween.
1) In the original, Michael comes from a normal, loving family. He’s kills his sister for no apparent reason. He is simply evil, and there is no real reason, and that is frightening. In the remake, they’re giving Michael a drugged out stripper for a mom, an abusive stepfather, and a whore for a sister. Gee. How original.
2) Young Michael is going to masturbate to pictures of dead animals… umm…………
3) Michael is going to talk while wearing the mask. Are you kidding me?
4) Michael is the size of a professional wrestler. He is no longer the stealthy, regular human known simply as “The Shape.”
5) The mask looks terrible. It’s barely even white, it’s filthy and it just looks awful.
6) The original Halloween has almost zero gore. It relies on atmosphere and suspense to frighten. Zombie’s Halloween is going to be a gore and nudity fest. It’s going to be ridiculous.
Why is Zombie even remaking this? Why doesn’t he just make his own damn killer movie if he’s changing nearly EVERYTHING that made the original Halloween great? Like I said, this is ridiculous.
It’s tricky isn’t it because no matter what the studio was going to remake it with Zombie on board or not, and sure If it was choosing between Zombie and a better horror director like Neil Marshall I would go with the latter but choosing between zombie and some mediocre music video director I’ll take Zombie.
The original is fantastic, there’s no disputing it but with a remake i would rather see a director go his own way and stay as far away from the original as is possible. That way if its good it stands on its own merits, and if its crap it doesn’t sour the original as much….
well that’s my logic….
@Mike
I agree about Loomis, Pleasance was killer, and I’m unsure about Mcdowell in the role. There was an early rumour that Ben Kingsley was going to be cast in the part and I would have proffered him the role.
You better get those side dishes ready come august! You want fries with those words?
The author of the article is a moron. Guess what: NOBODY wants to see “70’s exploitation films revisited.” Didn’t the failure of Grindhouse teach people like him ANYTHING? Seriously, who ARE these dumbasses that think crappy remakes of crappy movies from 30 years ago are a good idea?
As for the author’s OTHER idiotic comment, about Rob Zombie “knowing how to do violence”- geeze. I really don’t know how to respond to someone so farkin’ stupid that they don’t realize that it WASN’T gore that made the original Halloween a horror classic. It’s really sad that guys like him literally cannot understand that a bunch of fake blood and vile torture-porn is NOT what makes a good horror movie.
[...] got a lot of flack the other day for proposing that the Rob Zombies Halloween remake might actually be good, but i’m ok with [...]
OMG!!!!!! rob i think you made such a awsome remake of Halloween.

I think Rob should make another one halloween and halloween 2 was bad ass and ive seen them numerous times..i have all the original and the new ones on dvd, hell i even play the role of michael myers at a haunted house i work at during october…i think both where kool…Michael Myers is my idol…keep them coming Rob
Halloween 4 & 5 are the best movies.
MAN DUDES THIS IS MY BABY FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MICHAEL MYERS IS DAT REAL KILLER DATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
I have played the character Michael Myers for over 10 years at my local haunted house which is one of the biggest indoors haunts in the united states. over those past 10 years, I have used the ORIGINAL outfit from Halloween 1. CLASSIC! some people actually think I am the real Michael Myers because none of my mask are the cheap ones. But since Rob Zombie has done a remake of Halloween, i went with that look to see how people would take that Michael Myers look. Some people were just as scared as if it was the original mask others wasn’t. some people even said that the original mask and movie was better than the remakes.
regardless of what people may think about the franchise of Halloween. Its good to see sometimes how people would make that movie in their own mind. Sure the remake was ok and isn’t John Carpenter but never the less, rob did a good job with the first Halloween. He made Michael scary again and that was the point. i think over the years, people just didn’t find him as scary as they would Freddy or Jason.
there are some things i didn’t like in Halloween 2 very much. the reason y i didn’t like it very much was because his mask was almost gone, u seen a good bit of his face and at the end , he took it off and talked . now i am no brainiac, but over the entire original series Michael Myers never spoke. So why would you make him talk in the remake???
that kind of contradicts the entire franchise of him not speaking. i think that was a bad idea . also the mask well its pretty decent. you have to change up the mask every once in a while and i am sure when Halloween 3 comes out in 2011 , i am sure that they will go back to the original mask and use the original Michael Myers.
i <3 this movie
