First Still from ‘Death Sentence’

Death Sentence‘Death Sentence’ is the new revenge flick from James Wan, the man behind the first ‘Saw’ film, and the recent stateside release ‘Dead Silence’, which surprisingly gathered much better reviews than I was expecting.

Despite the explosion of not-so-great torture-horror movies that followed It, I actually liked the first Saw film, it was more restrained than it’s sequels and you could tell that James Wan is no idiot when it comes to directing, that being said his new film starring Kevin Bacon (pictured) sounds like it could be pretty sweet:

When a family falls victim to a vicious attack perpetrated as a gang initiation ritual, the vengeful father vows to track down each person involved in the crime. ‘Saw’ director James Wan and screenwriter Ian Jeffers feature adaptation of author Brian Garfield’s original novel. Aisha Tyler co-stars as the sympathetic homicide detective who questions her pledge to assist Bacon’s character after suspecting that he may have turned to murder as a means of exacting his revenge.

I like revenge films, I haven’t had a chance to see straightheads yet but the reviews haven’t been positive, and I saw ‘Outlaw’ recently which was in a similar vein with a more vigilante-style edge to it… and was really bad, just a straight up nasty film.

I’m hoping Death Sentence doesn’t fall into the same traps as those films appear to have done…and I hope Wan might finally get noticed a bit more. Strawdogs, Rolling Thunder, and perhaps ‘Sympathy for Mr Vengeance will hopefully be his points of reference.
