‘The Golden Compass’ trailer… shows promise.

The Golden CompassThe latest ‘Fantasy Epic’ soon to hit our screens is Phillip Pullman’s ‘The Golden Compass’, the first book from his ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy. I’ll freely admit I know nothing about these books, I’ve seen many people reading them and am aware of their existence and popularity.. but when It comes to the story.. I’m clueless. That being said maybe I’m not the best judge to say whether or not this is a good adaptation.. but on a filmick level it seems promising to me, big epic sets… decent actors, a vague steampunk-aesthetic… Oh yeah and a talking-armoured polar bear (always a plus).

Check it out in HD over at Yahoo here, or if you want a flash version go here

Say what you will about the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but as far as battle scenes go and just general overall production design I don’t think anybody could fault them. The Chronicles of Narnia however has a whole different kettle of fish. The trailers showed some promise but when the film played out it looked to me like an expensive tv film, that is to say…a bag of ass. So fingers crossed Compass delivers at the very least on the visuals the book has supposedly promised.

If anyone who’s read the books has something to say about the trailer … leave a comment below.

I like the above still because It’s like a sequel to ‘The Thing’ starring Daniel Craig. (That’s actually happening. It’s an internet rumour. I’m starting it. Tell everyone so it becomes true)

  1. Trailer looks good. The books are really unique. And you are right: for nolw it looks promising.

Be prepared: The Subtle Knife, book II, is like The Empire Strikes Back to Star Wars. Great visuals, fantastic story ideas… just everything. Not a mistake, that the advertising for the books went: Hotter then Potter!

Basically it’s the story “Paradise Lost” … Daniel Craig putting together an army from a dozen diffrent worlds and creatures - and as a leader fighting God and his Angels. But who is God an what he has done… Hmmm I don’t want to spoil everything.

It would be a shame, if TGC drops dead regarding box office, not to see the second one.

  2. Return of the Jedi was better ;)

  3. was it?

ah, hell… since ‘howard the fucking duck ‘and 20 years of waiting for indy i’m not the biggest lucas geek . never ever would i see one of his star-shit-movies again.

  4. @Vuk, you say that man but… I think he’s trained us like Pavlov’s dog, we hear the imperial march we start salivating. Imagine he suddenly announces star wars 7 is in the pipeline…the story is ummm.. I don’t know… something cool… wookies fighting on Hoth, getting snow clumped into their fur, then say you saw a trailer.. it looked really promising… THEN say all your friends were talking about it and wanted to go see it. THEN say.. everyone is talking about it… newspapers…tv… the man on the street. could you resist?

  5. Well I have hopes for his live action Star Wars TV series. Despite the recent movies not living up to the originals I’d see any Star Wars movie atleast once like culturalelite says.

  6. They’re awesome: would def. be my Desert Island boxset. - shits all over that rubbish little wizard.
Interesting(ish) fact: the original book was called Northern Lights - it was changed for the US market to match ‘The Subtle Knife’ and ‘The Amber Spyglass’. An object made of stuff, y’see. Yeah, yeah- subtle is totally a stuff.

Storn gagree on the Subtle Knife/Empire thing: it’s pretty dark!
