Woah… the ‘Cloverfield’ trailer everyones talking about arrives

**UPDATE** check it out in glorious quicktime on apple here **UPDATE**

So some bright spark managed to capture the supposed trailer for ‘Untitled J.J.Abrams project’ AKA ‘Cloverfield’ that has been playing before Transformers screenings across the U.S. It looks FUCKING AWESOME!

Very little is know about the project apart from the fact that Abrams is producing it, not directing it and that it’s a “giant monster movie”. There was also a brief description of the trailer posted on AICN last week, but this is the first time anyone outside of a movie theatre has been able to see the trailer. Grab it while you can, because I have an inkling it will disappear quickly.

from AICN:

I attended a Transformers sneak preview last night in Scottsdale, Arizona and wanted to tell you that, sure enough, you were right about the Cloverfield trailer. It was the first preview that played. While I’m sure plenty of people will continue to write in with their take on Bay’s latest, I wanted to give you the play by play of this amazing new trailer.

The entire thing takes place from the perspective of a party goer with a camera, waiting to surprise their friend, Rob. It’s basically a nice, big bon voyage party between friends. The entire thing feels incredibly real and like plenty of parties I’ve been to myself–people mingle, munch on chips, chatter, etc. Rob arrives, everyone yells surprise, the camera person interviews people for anything they have to say to Rob before he leaves.

After probably 30 seconds or a little longer, the apartment shakes, the lights flicker, people scream and head to the roof. A crowd approaches the edge of the roof immediately as a massive explosion miles away takes place. People scream and start scrambling back to the stairs. Right before they enter the stairwell, something like a comet (a piece of the previous explosion) comes flying near the people and the roof. The camera is very jumpy and cuts in and out as people make their way down a darkened stairwell to the street. At this point, I can’t remember if the screen cuts to black and says “From producer JJ Abrams…” or if that happens once they’re all on the ground. Either way, it’s at a good moment and is the first inkling as to what we’re watching.

Once on the ground, some people are running in hysteria while others look into the distance trying to figure what’s happening. Pieces of the explosion start flying towards the ground and hitting buildings all around. The people that were just looking into the distance finally start moving. At that moment, a massive piece of the explosion starts heading towards the camera. It flies right by and skids down the middle of the city street, hitting some people along the way. The piece finally slows down, rocks back towards the camera, and there she is–Lady Liberty’s face, in flames and destroyed. Cut to black. Hitting theatres January 2008 (I think it was 01/18/08).

In my opinion this is one of the most effective trailers I’ve ever seen. It’s not polished like most big budget film trailers, but it felt huge. It had people in the theatre chattering, wondering what the heck this is and when it’s coming. The entire trailer had a verisimilitude to it. It felt like it was happening… like we were there. In short, it did it’s job and then some. Surprisingly, they didn’t say what the name of the film was in the trailer. Whatever it’s called in the end though, I’m there.

This preview had me more tense and excited than anything I saw in Transformers. And heck, I even liked Transformers in all its Bayish ridiculousness.

With Abrams involved the only thing i’m worried about is that we’ll never get to see the monster, and if we do it’ll turn out to be a massive swarm of electronic bees.

  1. [...] the cloverfield trailer [...]

  2. The trailer certainly peaked my interest when I saw it at the Indianapolis Sneak Preview of Transformers. It was A LOT more interesting than Michael Bay’s movie. If you’re a huge Autobot/Decepticon fanboy, you’re going to have a geekgasm over the movie. If you don’t consider yourself a big fan…pick a different movie.

  3. Yeah after the army commercial and a few other things I didn’t spend 8 bucks for, we were treated to this gem. Although I hear this trailer was shot before the movie.

  4. maybe 1-18-08 is also the title? http://www.1-18-08.com/

  5. Does anyone else see a face in the background between the 2 girls on the 1-18-08 website? Maybe I’m imagining it. Went and had a look at the Ethan Haas websites, there’s a lot of Sanskrit on them, and after a bit of digging found a couple of articles about Sanskrit as an ideal machine language (http://www.amritapuri.org/education/sanskrit/artintell.php). So maybe all the blah about gods is not Lovecraftian, but more in line with robots? I for one think its gonna be a Gobots movie ;) . As for Ethan Haas he seems to be a character on some American sitcom about a class reunion called “The Class”. Someone has already edited the Wikipedia page of The Class to paint him as a prophet of Cthulu…..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Class#Characters (scroll down to characters).

  7. We have a closer version of the trailer over at trailerspy.com. Check it out.

  8. Hehe guess I did come across a bit obsessed. Got laid off today so spent the whole afternoon at work pissing about on the internet…..

  9. idk what the f** this is but from all my friends are saying about this is that it will most likely be a godzilla movie.

  10. idk what the f** this is but from all my friends are saying about this is that it will most likely be a godzilla movie. There not 100% sure though

  11. It’s a giant monster movie for sure, multiples in fact, if the rumors are to be true. They say it is a ‘War of the Gargantuas’ remake. We’ll see.

  12. So it’s War of the Worlds meets Blair Witch with a trailer that shamelessly preys upon latent 9/11 fears and then steals from Planet of the Apes for its climactic moment. The only suspense this film will generate is the identify of the monster(s). Once that bit of excitement passes we’ll be left with a movie that will probably end up being named Massive CGI Explosions.

  13. Heya, thanx for posting this because they didn’t show it while I watched the transformers in australia. From what I’ve been told. It will be a big monster. 2008, meteor like explosion, new york city; nah doesn’t know anything about it.

However, I had been anticipating for a widescreen adaptation for quite a while. It was planned first by WETA developer. They we’re planning a movie for 2008 and promised to give information about it at the end of 2006. They said that they were waiting to find a producer and they promise it will consists of big casts. Yep, they have big monsters. I am partial, but it might be NEON GENESIS EVANGELION

When it comes to great movie with big monster in 21st century, you expect that it should be dealing with realistic theme and believable to certain extent. Neon Genesis evangelion was a japanese anime, taking place in tokyo (oh, did someone plan to move to tokyo?). Wikipedia has a huge information about NGE because the very complex nature of its concept. There is an image of the anime’s newspaper http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Secondimpact.jpg. The years are abit wrong but it is very near.

in 1.26 there is a monstrous cry. Evangelion made such cry too, and so does the other ‘angels’. Watch second 25th of the clip below. THe scene is abit gross.

  14. I have found one remaining copy of the “Cloverfield” trailer online at http://haasunderground.blogspot.com for anyone who has not yet seen it.

  15. Working version of the trailer can be found here: http://www.dtheatre.com/read.php?sid=4177

  16. Voltron.

  17. This could be a contemporary version of The Beast of Averoigne by Clark Ashton Smith. HP Lovecraft spin-off / rip-off. An Alien riding a comet that crashes on earth / earthquake / explosion in the beginning, the spinning roaring sounds / flying black creature with super-powers and red eyes?….perhaps? End of the world Ma! Perhaps?

  18. so..do any of you guys think it may be a Voltron movie?? I swear when they are all running in the street and the girl says “what is it?” then a guy says ” I saw it. It’s a lion! It’s huge!” just a suggestion

  19. That trailer alone sparked anticipation & enthusiasm in everyone it the theater I was in …cant wait…

  20. I really hope it will be robotech but i really doubt it. actually why dont they do it robotech?? they did a good job with cgi in starship troopers and most other movies with cgi. so why not a real actors in Robotech?
