Haneke’s remake of his own film ‘Funny Games’ gets a trailer
I still don’t think i’ve read any reports of why Haneke has chosen to remake his own film but in english, but I won’t label it as a good or bad thing until I see the film, but of course the cynic in me says it’s for money. I saw the original when it came out back in 1997/98 and loved it, it’s the classic Haneke mix of humour, drama, and horror with a consistent undertone of fear and dread that most of the people you see on screen are going to be badly hurt in some way or another.
Funny Games is playing at the London Film Festival so i’ll hopefully have a review up sometime in early October.
Honestly though it didn’t need to be remade, and it’s not like Haneke’s put a new spin on it, or it’s some kind of Evil Dead 1/Evil Dead 2 type situation.. as far as I can tell this is an absolute shot-for-shot remake… they’ve even cut the trailer to be exactly the same as the original.
You can check out the trailer for the remake which stars Tim Roth (nice to see him back on the screen), Naomi Watts and Michael Pitt over at msn in crappy straming windows format here, or you can download it as a wmv here and then check out the trailer for the original (1997) film below…

I don’t really see much point in this, other than opening Haneke’s work up to a wider audience. The trailer is also exactly the same as the original Clockwork Orange trailer, which in turn was ripped off by The Rules of Attraction.
I don’t understand why Haneke is doing this for the money, as arthouse films go, since the original “Funny Games” his have all been pretty financially successful. Maybe he wants to do something big budget but on his own terms and is using this to drum up some cash….?
When everyone else reporting on this film are using the fantastic poster with a tearful Naomi Watts (who is the lead actor as Suzanne Lothar was in the original) as the lead photo, I’m trying to figure out why you’ve chosen to use a flat and non-representative one with the 2 thugs, and then of course the fact that you’ve put 2nd listed Tim Roth before Watts has answered it clear enough that either you’re one of those people who dislike her and have been slighting her time and again, or simply there’s something in your sub-conscience that you think the male or the actors have to be preferred over their counterparts in the film world. Either way, it’s a shame on you.
