A video review of ‘Blue Water, White Death’ from ‘Film Junk’

My personal list of ‘films to see’ is ridiculously long, and grows longer practically everyday. Shark documentary ‘Blue Water, White Death’ has been on that list for a long time, and while you can grab the dvd off ebay i’ve never got round to actually buying it. So Jay C over at Film Junk did this video review of the film a while back, and I just re-watched it. It’s a good review but more than anything has spurred me into action to get hold of a copy of the movie… it looks like a fascinating watch..

  1. woah woah woah, lets not just stop at saying Seu Jorge’s character in The Life Aquatic was inspired by the folk guitar playing camera man, lets go the whole way and say this documentury looks like The Life Aquatic for real. I’m so there (I’m guessing Wes Anderson is a big fan as well).

  2. I’m sure man, but then I think ‘White Death’ is pretty derivative in itself… Check out the old Jacque Cousteau stuff (below) …….now that shit’s almost identical

  4. Blue water, White Death stands alone as a superb cinema achievement. The camera work is superior to Jacques Cousteau’s work The widescreen photography is beautifully composed, pin sharp and the DVD transfer is as fresh as the day the film was born. The film was made by cameramen who were at home above and below water. The short scene of Stan Waterman talking aboard the boat is perfectly framed in a ship’s jumbled deck, and perfectly lit by late afternoon sun. The shot of a steam train hauling sperm whale carcasses to the flensing yard sticks in my mind. I love Life Aquatic; it brought back the style of the Cousteau documentaries and added some extra fantasy.
