I haven’t talked about this film yet, but trust me on this, in six months it’ll be the documentary every good film nerd will be talking about. I don’t wanna get hyperbolic about it, but i’d compare it to ‘The King of Kong’ in the way I think it will really get a lot of exposure via word-of-mouth, and people blogging about what a gem of a film it is.

At 14, best friends Robb Reiner and Lips made a pact to rock together forever. Their band, Anvil, hailed as the “demi-gods of Canadian metal, ” influenced a musical generation that includes Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, despite never hitting the big time. Following a calamitous European tour, Lips and Robb, now in their fifties, set off to record their 13th album in one last attempt to fulfill their boyhood dreams.

I hadn’t seen or even heard anything about the film before I sat down at a screening at the LFF to see it, and it blew me away. The lazy-comparison critics are making is ‘It’s the real life Spinal Tap’ and the director to an extent goes out of his way to try and present it like that (showing knobs being turned up to 11, members retelling stories about the bands names before they were ‘Anvil’), but underneath that selling-to-an-audience-proposition it’s a genuinely touching film about a band (and especially the lead singer ‘Lips’ and the drummer ‘Rob Reiner’.. yeah that’s really his name) that are still trying to make it 30 years after their brief hit of fame. Still plugging away and are consistently determined to make it big again, despite everyone and everything around the band conspiring against them.

When documentarians luck-out with the characters they’re capturing on film, it really lifts the film above a straight up doc into a place where you genuinely rooting for the people to succeed/fail and hopefully realise their dreams. ‘King of Kong’ got this with Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell, and ‘Anvil!’ get’s it with Lips and Rob Reiner (That’s Rob on the left of the poster, Lips.. is the naked dude)

I’m not ashamed to say I shed a tear… not just once…but TWICE during the film, and if you don’t shed a little tear.. well maybe you’re a cold hearted bastard.

Up there next to ‘The Good, the Bad and the Weird’, ‘Anvil!: The Story of Anvil’ was the best film I saw at the LFF this year. Hands down.

Check out some clips from the film here, the trailer is supposed to arrive next week, and if you see the film playing at a local filmfest, I highly recommend you seek it out.

I’m not sure if this is just a UK trend or what, but I sort of wish they would print them just so I could buy them and keep them somewhere dark. Bring them out at dinner parties. yeah maybe not.

Every1 a company I’ve only just discovered produce a lot of artwork for the UK market and do the ’show the rejected alternative versions’ thing on their website much the same as my much favourited All city media. Fascinating stuff (well… to me at least. fuck you guys if you care or not )

Check out the official uk quad for ‘The Good, The Bad and The Weird’, and the four alternative unused routes below it. So awesome. (Also, not sure if i’ve mentioned it here, but ‘TGTBATW’ is batshit badass, and will kick you in the cock when you see it, so you’d better have your eyes peeled for it when it hits the uk cinemas fuckers)

I’ve missed a lot of horror news while i was away from the blog, mainly because the horror scene moves at such a fast pace, films are announced, produced and distributed in such a small time frame that things flew past me faster than …umm… your mum (?)

‘Triangle’ is the new film horror director Christopher Smith, who’s previous films ‘Severance’ and ‘Creep’ I really enjoyed. It stars Melissa George.. who is officially HAWT, but the poster and plot synopsis give me bad vibes, if only because I can see parallels with the Aja/Jack Bauer so-bad-its-just-bad mess that was ‘Mirrors’

TRIANGLE, a unique concept psycholigical-thriller that turns the genre on its head. When Jess hits a seagull on a drive to the local harbour, little does she know that it is a harrowing omen of things to come. She sets sail on a yacht with a group of friends and already things are not as they seem ” she just cant put her finger on why. Her suspicions are heightened when the yacht hits a storm and the group is forced to board a passing ocean liner to get to safety ” a ship Jess is convinced shes been on before. The ship appears deserted, the clock on board has stopped, but they are not alone Someone is intent on hunting them down, one by one. And Jess unknowingly holds the key to end the terror.

hmmmm.. i’m gonna keep an eye on this one, but seen as it’s the film seems more ‘psychological’ (read: boring) than Smith’s other movies, this is going in the ‘maybe’ pile for now.

For another example of things i’d missed…if you don’t include the advances of….your mum… I had literally no clue that 70’s Ozsploitation movie ‘Long Weekend’ has been remade, directed by the guy who did Storm Warning (excellent, under-the-radar aussie horror film) and starring Jim ‘The Passion’ Caviezel (Check the trailer below). and there’s a raft of other things i’m still playing catch-up with too.

Man I am really jealous of Todd over at Twitch, He’s currently at the American Film Market checking out promo reels for a whole bunch of projects i’m really interested in. He’s seen some stuff from the live action adaption of ‘Blood: The Last vampire’

Blood The Last Vampire. The ultimate success of this one is going to depend largely on how convincing star Gianna Jun ends up being in English but on a purely visual level? Damn. This thing has definitely got the goods.

e.x.c.i.t.e.d.

but he’s also checked out the Promo Reel for the film i was babbling about a couple of posts back; Nicholas Winding Refn’s ‘Valhalla Rising’ starring Mads Mikelsen

Nicolas Winding Refn’s viking epic has been one of the most anticipated titles going in these parts from the day it was announced and if the promo reel that the Wild Bunch have on exhibition is any indication then Refn fans are going to be very, very happy. Mikkelsen looks stellar in the lead role, the rest of the cast is very strong, and this just looks like sparse, brutal perfection. Another winner from the director of Pusher.

I think i’ve talked about Dark Days before, and Marc Singers new film (now scrapped) ‘Warriors’. Dark Days was a great debut for Singer and made a big splash on the festival circuit when it was released back in 2000, and it still holds up as a great piece of documentary film.

DARK DAYS, a groundbreaking documentary from British director Marc Singer with a moving soundtrack from DJ Shadow, shows a way of life that is unimaginable to most people. The film focuses on a group of homeless people that live deep underground in an abandoned New York City railroad tunnel. During the daytime they scavenge for food on the streets of New York. At night, they retreat to the tunnel where they have built homes out of scrap metal, plastic, and plywood. They have electricity, furniture, and working kitchens, not to mention community, comradery, and the support of each other.

If you want to burn an hour and half you could do far worse than watch this (obviously I recommend you buying the dvd to appreciate it fully, but this is enough for you to get the flavour, oh and you can hear the brilliant soundtrack from DJ Shadow)

This is currently being ‘disappeared’ in the mafia sense of the word from most places around the web, but luckily we still have a copy. It’s worth checking out if only because you get to see some more of Bale, more Sam Worthington (both interesting actors) and some more sweet robot action smashing some shit-up in the dessert.

The set-up of this movie gets me interested, unfortunately the ever-present retardo-named McG is there to give me a swift kick in the cock, and that coupled with things like ‘WE’VE GOT 10 DIFFERENT TERMINATORS IN THIS MOVIE’… makes me really fucking worried..

I wanted to catch this film at the London Film Festival but just couldn’t spare the time from my schedule of playing xbox in my pants and occasionally touching myself in the happy place. I really like Nicholas Winding Refn’s other work; the Pusher Trilogy, Bleeder, even ‘Fear X’ with John Turturro which i’m pretty sure nobody saw except for me…and perhaps John Turturro.. but maybe not. This on the other hand… I don’t know looks weird. I’m interested in Charles Bronson as a character (Britain’s most notorious prison inmate, spent 35 years in prison and even had a wing built to keep him away from the other prisoners and guards) but this looks a bit too much like it does nothing but glorifies who he is.

There’s a spate of books published here in the uk ‘written’ by retired east-end gangsters with titles like ‘Ronnie ‘The Teeth’ Collins: Portrait of a double-ard barstard’ that frankly make me want to puke. These are people that made a lot of money through extortion and violent crime, that are now admired and given book-deals because they’re real ‘cockerknees’. dogshit. So it might be an understatement to say that film versions of these kind of books… don’t interest me, much like the recently released ‘Cass‘.

I trust Refn based on his previous work to be smarter than this, and hopefully it’ll be a much more well rounded film and a film worth talking about.

I’ve no idea if ‘Bronson’ will make it to cinemas, but Winding Refn’s also got another movie (A viking film starring the awesome Mads Mikkelsen) in the pipeline that may well arrive before we see this released, until then dig out one of the pusher films (Also starring Mikkelsen) or FearX (see the trailer below)

Lets face it the X-Men was awesome, X-Men 2 not so much and X-Men 3 hands down awesome (my views may not entirely match anyone’s here and probably no ones!) but the movies we will want to see are the ones based on characters for example next year we have Wolverine in the his Origins movie. So today when I saw this over at Spoiler TV I was like heck yeah!

“The original X-Men film began with a prologue that showed the character as a child being led to a concentration camp by Nazis and that is the period in which the Magneto film will take place. This setup will allow a future villain to at least flirt with the designation of protagonist since the character will be seen almost exclusively in his formative years.”

“The storyline will heavily involve Professor X, the wheelchair-using X-Men leader. That character was a soldier in the allied force that liberated the concentration camps. The professor meets Magneto after the war and while they bond over the realisation that they are alike in their special powers, their differences soon turn them into enemies.”

A Magneto movie will kick ass into the next millennium!, thoughts on this?

So everyone these days think we need a film that has a superhero type character and it doesn’t matter whether its Spiderman or something a bit older like League of Extradinoray Gentlemen. This time its Dorian Gray starring Ben Barnes (he played a weakling prince in Narnia!) and Colin Firth (The man with man sweaters in Bridget Jones). To sum up After his portrait is complete Dorian wishes that he wouldn’t age. The portrait takes on, and transforms, all his sins, immorality, inner ugliness. He does check it out from time to time. It ages, etc., while he stays eternally youthful and continues on his path of debauchery (Thanks Colinygal in the comments who corrected me =p)

The Poster looks creepy but if the movie is going to be good who knows!

I fucking love zombies. Fingers crossed this will be amazing, but there’s always new Norwegian zombie flick ‘Dead Snow’ to look forward too if it’s rubbish. (Teenagers in the snow + Nazi zombies = Munching = awesome)

" class="alignleft" width="375" height="500" />I make no secret of the fact that John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’ is one of my favourite movies of all time, so while I was randomly searching for something on google images (nothing to do with John Carpenter, The Thing, Kurt Russell or even flame throwers…really..) I came across this Halloween costume on flickr of a guy dressed as MacReady. f..u..c..k..i.n’ sweet

Not only is this guy a total badass, “full of win” etc, but he attended said halloween party with a bunch of other guys dressed as Kurt Russell’s movie characters. Badassedness. To the max.

I really hope they all made lewd Russell-puns all night “wanna see my Thing, it’ll make you say “you gotta be fucking kidding”, or perhaps “they don’t call me Snake for nothing, not even the president can save you now honey”

Which is of course how I talk in my head all day long.

Check out ‘Team Russell’ here, and here

and see the original MacReady costume here

On a similar tack check out this great ’sweded’ version of the horror classic… I wish it snowed in London
